Chapter 60: Mutual Trust
Back in the sunlit forest, the brilliance of day contrasted sharply with the enigmatic darkness Jayce had just emerged from. The sun hung high in the sky, casting its warm embrace over the surroundings. As Jayce stirred, his consciousness returning to the world, he was greeted by the concerned faces of his party members, each one approaching him as he sat up.
Lianna, her gentle eyes filled with both relief and worry, was the first to address him. “Jayce, how are you feeling?” Her voice held a soft undertone, her magical powers capable of perceiving even the most subtle changes in his condition.
Jayce’s mind was still in a state of transition, the echoes of his encounter with Rubick resounding in his thoughts. He managed a slow nod, his response delayed as if he was grappling to fully return to the present moment. “I’m… fine,” he finally replied, his voice carrying a hint of distraction.
Ben and Paul stepped forward next, their expressions a mix of determination and regret. “We’re sorry for not holding the line properly back there,” Paul began, his tone laced with self-censure. “We promise to do better next time.”
Jayce blinked a few times, staring at the two with confusion. His gaze moved over the party questioningly. Why did it look like they were children who were in trouble?
Amber chimed in, her appreciation shining through her fiery eyes. “Your quick thinking saved us, Jayce. You’re a true leader, and we’re lucky to have you.”
Zane’s silent nod conveyed his sentiment, his laconic nature not requiring words to express his acknowledgment of Jayce’s leadership.
Colin, with his characteristic joviality, wrapped Jayce in a bear hug that threatened to squeeze the breath out of him. “Thanks for digging me out, mate. I was enjoying the earths embrace a bit too much,” he chuckled, causing a chorus of laughter to ripple through the group.
Jackie, the last to approach, looked at Jayce with emotions dancing in her eyes. Her words carried a mixture of apology and gratitude, laced with vulnerability. “I-I’m sorry, Leader. When I thought Colin was gone, I lost myself… I hated everything, even you.” Her voice trembled slightly. “But you were right. You were always thinking of all of us, trying to find a way for us to survive. Thank you.”
Jayce’s emotions churned within him as he met Jackie’s gaze, her gratitude and mixed emotions pulling at his heart. “There’s no need to thank me,” he began, his voice carrying a weight of self-doubt. He lowered his head, his mind a tempest of self-blame. “I had failed us from the moment we entered this forest.”
Colin’s brows furrowed in disapproval, his massive frame casting a shadow over Jayce. Stepping forward, he positioned himself over Jayce, his towering presence formidable. “Hey, you better take that back, short stuff,” he declared firmly. “I don’t take insults to my leader lightly.”
Jayce’s surprise was palpable as he craned his neck to look up at the behemoth man. “What are you talking about?” he asked, his confusion evident.
Clearing his throat with a sense of purpose, Colin reiterated, “You did the best you could in the situation we were in. Without your noise traps, we could have been ambushed while still sleeping.”
Amber’s voice chimed in, resonating with conviction. “And if you hadn’t instructed us to torch the forest and create an Ice Dome to limit the number of wolves we had to face at once, we wouldn’t have survived.”
Echoes of agreement rang out through the camp, solidifying the sentiment. “Not to mention that you were the one who ingeniously used my Goblin Staff as a melee weapon to inflict the berserk status on those wolves, when I was out of it.” Jackie interjected, her voice carrying admiration.
Jayce found himself surrounded by friends, their genuine trust in him enveloping him like a warm embrace. It was as if Lianna’s healing magic had touched not only his body but also his soul, replenishing his spirit.
Yet, despite this overwhelming show of faith, a conflict raged within him. His conversation with Rubick had revealed that he and his friends were being observed, prompting him to keep his secrets locked away. The knowledge that divulging his regression could bring dire consequences hung heavily over him.
He felt a surge of gratitude for his companions’ trust, yet his conscience balked at the idea of fully embracing it. The truth was a double-edged sword, capable of both uniting and dividing. So, as much as he appreciated their loyalty, he knew that he couldn’t fully reciprocate it.
With a heavy sigh, he rose to his feet, his gaze lingering on his friends with a sense of resignation. “I’m sorry, everyone, I cannot accept—”
Before he could continue, Colin’s arm enveloped his shoulders, the giant’s unexpected gesture pulling Jayce into a rugged hug. “Look here, Leader,” Colin’s voice carried a warmth that belied his imposing figure. “We know you have your secrets, but honestly, we don’t care.”
Jayce’s mind spun, his thoughts momentarily disrupted by the giant’s display of affection. He glanced at his companions, their eyes sparkling with a mixture of amusement and camaraderie.
“Of course you have your mysteries,” Lianna stepped forward, her radiant presence emanating compassion. “But we can tell that you’re always looking out for us. If you can’t tell us everything, then there must be a reason…” Her voice held an undercurrent of understanding. “We trust you. Your actions speak louder than words.”
The outpouring of support and understanding from his friends struck a chord within Jayce, the resonance reverberating through his very soul. His emotions welled up, a lump forming in his throat that prevented him from finding the adequate words to convey his overwhelming gratitude. It was an indescribable feeling, this deep bond of mutual trust that now wove them together.
Reflecting on his journey through the 10 harsh years of the apocalypse, a period he had traversed before he regressed to the present timeline, he recognized the rarity of such a connection. Such trust had seemed like an elusive concept during those trying times. Memories of his parents flashed through his mind, a time when he might have felt something akin to this level of trust. A tingling sensation stung his eyes, causing him to blink rapidly as his cheeks dampened.
Confusion flickered within him, ’What’s happening?’ he wondered, his fingers rising involuntarily to his wet cheeks. It was then that he realized: he was crying. The tears flowed down from his clear blue eyes unabashedly.
