Chef in the Apocalypse

Chapter 219: World Summit (5)

After not receiving any responses, Jayce nodded.

“At some point we’ll get you all to swear an oath. Once that’s done, I will distribute the method to increase your power.”

“Excuse me” Sophie who had yet to leave the stage just yet, stepped towards Jayce. Now that she was closer, she could feel his power even more intently.

However, that was not all she noticed. Her cheeks flushed a little read as her eyes roamed over his figure that was being hidden behind the Chef uniform.

“What is the penalty for breaking the oath?” she asked curiously.

Since there was no government or legal system, technically there was no established justice or hierarchy in this world, at least for now.

Jayce nodded, “If anyone were to go back on their word, they will be hunted down by all the members of the Human Alliance until they are killed.”

While his facial expression remained neutral, everyone in the square took the threat seriously. Some who were looking at taking advantage of the situation suddenly began to rethink their approach.

Like Sophie, they had recognized that this new world was a lawless jungle. All power structures had been removed, the economy shattered as humans were thrown back into the dark ages.

Now the only thing that mattered in this world was ones strength. Judging by Jayce’s aura, and the overwhelming power of his underling, they had no confidence in defeating them at all, let alone the entirety of the Human Alliance.

Sophie nodded, swallowing her saliva.

“Moving on.” Jayce said, once again walking to the center of the stage.

“6 months ago, I began to reach out to some of you. I distributed the blueprints for the teleportation arrays and told you about the mana stones.”

A small smile formed on his face, “I know a few of you asked me what the mana stones were useful for, other than powering the teleportation array and other arrays.”

He paused for a moment, to build suspense. “Can anyone tell me what the uses are for these mana stones?”

Everybody in the crowd had looks of confusion on their faces. This was one of the burning questions they had. Some people had even used this 6 months to properly study the mana stones in hopes of delving into their secrets.

Unfortunately, they lacked something that Jayce had. The ability to absorb their essence and turn it into Inner Qi.

“No one? Well that’s fine.” Jayce remarked, producing a low-tier mana stone in his hands.

“Watch closely.”

Jayce closed his eyes, focusing on the stone within his hands.

Everyone watched with rapt attention, waiting for any changes. After around 20 seconds, the man on stage opened his eyes and smiled.

“Well, what do you think?” he asked proudly.

“Err what happened?

“Did he actually do anything?”

“This is awkward.”

Whispers of confusion and even a few laughs broke out within the crowd. It was clear that they hadn’t comprehended what had just happened in front of their eyes.

Sophie on the other hand due to her proximity and her superior senses, was able to feel what had happened. Her mouth opened in shock. She had clearly felt the energy within the mana stone disappear, increasing that man’s aura almost imperceptibly.

“Hehe.” Jayce couldn’t help but chuckle at the reaction of the crowd. In the next moment, he held out his hand with the mana stone atop it and flicked it with his other hand.

The mana stone shattered, turning into dust in the next moment.

“Wha?”

“W-What the hell was that?”

Another uproar ran throughout the crowd, this time there was even more confusion. Most of them had mined the mana stones before, which meant they had likely accidentally broken one or two during the extraction.

Mana stones were also hardy, and tough to break without considerable strength put behind the attack. Either Jayce was so strong that he could break the mana stone like so with a simple flick, or he had done something else.

It wouldn’t make sense to just destroy the mana stone, after all what would be the point in doing so.

Jayce didn’t leave them in suspense for too much longer, raising his voice. “The primary use of these mana stones… Is to absorb their energy to increase your own power!”

This time, the level of shock that spread through the crowd was ten times the last. People almost knocked each other over, trying to summon their own mana stones in order to replicate the effect on stage.

Seeing the state of the crowd, Jayce couldn’t help but let out a hollow chuckle. He knew it was futile, yet he didn’t bother stopping them from trying. Rather than explain it to them, it was easier if they failed themselves.

And fail they did. After about 10 minutes, there were sounds of cursing and annoyance throughout the Central Square of those who had failed. Which happened to be everyone who tried.

“Alright, now that you all have tried and failed. Shall I tell you the trick?”

Jayce had the audience in the palm of his hands, from when Colin had stepped onto the stage until now. A part of him was enjoying leading these people on with every word he said, it was almost as if he was the lead figure in a play, atop this stage.

As his mind recognized this fact, he suddenly thought about the mysterious Rubick. Could he also be putting on a show? Acting as the main lead and leading us towards a desired outcome?

The crowd was dead silent, waiting with anticipation for Jayce to reveal the secret to absorbing energy from the mana stones. However, the man in question was currently deep in thought all of a sudden, looking as if he was on a tangent.

Dave leaned over to his leader and whispered, “Is this guy okay in the head?”

“Ahem.” The man in the hooded cloak loudly cleared his throat, trying to get Jayce’s attention.
