Chapter 106: Beast Tide (9)
The triumphant cheers of the defenders rang out across the city walls like a thunderclap. They had witnessed Colin’s astounding feat of strength, and their spirits soared in response. Colin himself basked in the adulation of his comrades, the roars and applause fueling the fire of determination that had always burned within him. The cheers reverberated through the air, energizing the defenders and making them feel invincible.
Jayce couldn’t help but marvel at the magnetic charisma and sheer power Colin possessed. The big man had an uncanny ability to inspire those around him, drawing strength from their admiration. It was a rare gift, and it had just played a crucial role in shifting the tide of battle.
However, Jayce knew that they couldn’t afford to lose momentum. The battlefield might have fallen into a momentary pause, but the monsters were far from defeated. He shouted to get the attention of the ranged units, his voice cutting through the euphoria. The defenders swiftly fell back into their positions, readying their weapons.
As if responding to Jayce’s command, the monstrous horde stirred once more, shaking off their momentary paralysis. Their eyes once again turned toward the city walls, and with a renewed sense of urgency, they charged forward.
Jayce’s heart raced as he watched them approach, his eyes fixed on the red flags. With a resolute expression, he raised his hand and gave the signal. The air was filled with the twang of bowstrings and the incantations of mages, and another volley of spells and arrows rained down upon the approaching Beast Tide.
The sky became a swirling canvas of destruction as spells detonated and arrows found their marks. Smoke and dust billowed up from the impact points, obscuring the view of the monsters below. The deafening roars of the creatures were drowned out by the cacophony of the defenders’ onslaught.
Jayce checked his faction menu once again, feeling a sense of urgency burning from within. Even with the destruction of the large Tortoise, he still couldn’t shake the unknown feeling of dread that welled from within his heart.

“Dammit” He cursed under his breath, feeling anxious. He quickly pulled up the Event Quest window, to try and gauge how much longer they needed to fight.
Quest Objectives:
Monster Slaughter: Kill 10,000 monsters [4311/10000]
Boss Takedowns: Kill Boss Monsters [1/5]
Survivor’s Guilt: [1102/1153 – 95% survival rate]
Bastion’s Last Stand: Protect city walls [In progress]
Jayce looked at the quest progress with mixed emotions. He was pleasantly surprised that they had managed to kill over 4000 monsters thus far, with so little casualties as well. Yet he still felt sorrow, although they were just a number to the system, they were still brave humans who had put their lives on the line for their city.
Even throughout his whole ten years in the Apocalypse prior to his regression, he had never participated in such a large-scale battle. Hell, he had never even participated in a raid with more than 20 people, yet while they had battled for the past hour, they had sustained 51 casualties.
This caused Jayce to falter for a moment, as his mind tried to put everything into perspective. Yet it seemed that it was not the time for such thoughts.
Suddenly, a monstrous creature, resembling an ape but twisted into a nightmarish form, suddenly vaulted itself onto the ramparts. Its limbs were grotesquely elongated, ending in gnarled, clawed hands that scraped across the stone as it landed. Black fur bristled over its hulking body, matted with the filth of the battlefield.
With a terrifying, guttural roar, the beast lunged at Jayce, its primal instincts driving it to seize its prey. Its massive, bony fingers closed around Jayce’s arm, squeezing like a vice. The sheer strength of the creature threatened to crush bone and flesh alike.
But Jayce, his instincts honed through countless battles, reacted with lightning speed. In his free hand, he brandished the Bloodfang Dagger, its blade gleaming with a malevolent crimson sheen. With a swift and precise thrust, he drove the dagger deep into the monster’s flesh, its sharp edge tearing through the coarse fur and into the beast’s veins.
The moment the dagger’s venomous tip pierced the creature’s flesh, a hissing, noxious smoke began to seep from the wound. The poison worked with unnatural speed, coursing through the beast’s veins and ravaging its body.
A guttural howl of agony erupted from the creature’s gaping maw as the venom seized its nervous system. Its grip on Jayce’s arm faltered, and the once-ferocious creature found itself wracked with convulsions.
Jayce, grim determination etched across his face, seized the opportunity. He wrenched his arm free from the creature’s weakening grasp, throwing himself backwards and falling to the floor. The Bloodfang Dagger remained embedded in the monster’s chest, its sinister poison continuing its relentless assault.
The ape-like creature thrashed and convulsed, its monstrous form contorting in grotesque agony. With a final, pitiful groan, it collapsed to the stone floor, lifeless and defeated. Jayce let out a sigh of relief, having escaped the immediate danger thanks to his quick reflexes and Legendary Dagger.
It just showed that he had been too naive, one could not afford to let down their guard in the middle of a battlefield. Whilst counting his lucky stars, a familiar figure appeared in front of him, wielding his sword and batting away another monster that had climbed up the walls.
He walked over to the monstrous Ape and pulled out the Bloodfang Dagger that was still plunged deeply into its chest. He turned back to Jayce, “I think you dropped this,” Paul joked, his smile wide and infectious.
Jayce chuckled, his voice filled with familiarity, “Hey, I put it there on purpose.”
But in the next heartbeat, the world seemed to warp and twist with a cruel twist of fate. A streak of blinding light sliced through the air, cutting across their vision with brutal swiftness. Jayce’s laughter died in his throat as his eyes widened in horror.
Paul’s smiling face contorted into a mask of shock and pain as a thin, crimson line appeared, stretching from ear to ear. Blood erupted from the gruesome wound, painting the stone beneath him a morbid shade of red. His body swayed for a moment, as if suspended in time, before it crumpled to the ground in a sickening thud.
The world, which had just echoed with laughter and the sounds of battle, now hung in a heavy, unbearable silence. Jayce’s mind raced, his world crumbling around him. He felt an agonizing mix of grief, fury, and helplessness surge through his veins. A life that had been filled with laughter and camaraderie was extinguished in an instant.
He knelt beside his fallen friend, his fingers trembling as he reached out to touch the lifeless face that had, just moments ago, been graced by a smile. Now there was only half of his face left, painting a gruesome picture.
“who. did. this?” Jayce muttered, his eyes welling up with tears.
“who did THIS?” he repeated, his voice rising with fury and indignation.
“I SAID WHO THE F*CK DID THIS!?”
