Chapter 1319: Mana
Khan’s presence acted like a brush that painted anything it touched purple-red. Seemingly aimless gales of air and mana gained his iconic shades, growing brighter as they echoed his chilling anger.
The purple-red gales expanded randomly from Khan’s figure, almost resembling thick tentacles that stretched into the distance. Still, the area as a whole experienced their influence, albeit not in a forceful manner.
Part of the landmass changed color on its own, abiding by Khan’s desires. The world resonated with his aura, aiding him in unleashing his chosen effects.
The landmass broke, and the same went for the grey sand below. Cracks opened everywhere as the ground started bleeding, releasing white, dark, and purple-red trails of smoke toward the sky.
That wasn’t part of a spell or technique. Khan’s mere presence was causing that while purple-red gales continued to expand from his figure, growing dimmer and fainter as they reached for more distant areas.
The two black aliens had already witnessed similar effects, but noticed that something was different now. Khan’s anger was quieter, but its effects spread farther and deeper, seemingly getting the world ready for what he wanted to unleash.
Moreover, the glowing, dark smoke’s inability to affect that spreading influence highlighted a critical feature. Khan’s aura had gained something unclear but immensely profound and undeniable. His existence as a whole had changed, and the black aliens couldn’t affect it.
Khan looked to be the black aliens’ equal now, which shouldn’t be possible, especially since he didn’t stop there. His influence slightly surpassed the evolved warriors’, and that was without releasing mana or spells.
"Give me a second," Khan casually said, closing his eyes. "I’m trying something out."
The purple-red gales grew even fainter, and that change started to affect the symphony around Khan, too. His influence seemed to disappear, but the two aliens knew the truth. Khan was spreading his intentions even further, but they had become too subtle to see with the naked eye.
’Why couldn’t I copy the Great Old One’s ability before?’ Khan wondered, focusing on his perception. ’A planet might still be too much for me, but a quadrant ... I’m so dumb at times.’
Khan’s influence kept spreading, blending with the world’s symphony and causing a chain reaction. A vague, subtle, but vast level of control expanded in Khan’s mind, and the very sky changed as soon as he willed it.
A thundering noise resounded in the area, and another followed. The clear grey sky above the battlefield began to shine as purple-red clouds manifested on its canvas.
The clouds darkened, fusing with each other to consume the natural illumination that shone on the quadrant, replacing it with their own light. More thundering noises followed as brighter sparks ran through those gaseous shapes’ fabric, building up power.
In the past, Khan had referred to himself and had been labeled as a walking calamity, but Liiza’s revelations had given a new meaning to his existence.
The two black aliens couldn’t help but look at the sky, warily inspecting what those ominous clouds harbored. They didn’t know about Khan’s previous title, but the new one felt evident. He wasn’t only a calamity anymore. He could make the world unleash those for him.
"This might get rough," Khan warned, opening his eyes. "Watch your heads. I don’t have much time to waste, but you did try to hurt my wife. I can’t have you die so easily."
The aliens had just begun lowering their gazes when blinding lights flashed all over the sea of clouds. Lightning bolts shot out of the brightest points, instantly crossing the sky to crash down on the cracked ground, releasing a cacophony of thundering noises.
The lightning bolts didn’t just disappear after hitting the ground. They remained in place, connecting the clouds to the charred craters of their own creation, thundering in rage while spreading their destructive force.
Cracks opened on the landmass and sandy ground all around the craters. Dust and energy released from the destruction of the world’s fabric rose through the sky as a spiderweb of fissures spread everywhere, making the ground zero nodes of an intricate puzzle.
The spiderweb spread as far as the eye could see. The black aliens tried to search for its edges, only for the enduring lightning bolts to quickly reclaim their attention.
Instead, Khan took the magnificent, fearsome, and widespread event for granted, jumping into the sky to hover next to the nearest lightning bolt. He caressed its unstable, crackling surface, feeling no pain at the sparks that landed on his fingers, before patting the massive structure, seemingly praising it.
"This is a different iteration of the Great Old One’s ability," Khan casually said, his eyes snapping at the two aliens when he recalled something. "Big guy. Well, big snake. Lots of scales and quite a big ego. It addressed itself in the plural. I don’t know if you have met."
The black aliens obviously didn’t answer, but Khan wasn’t really waiting for a reply. The lightning bolt was five times thicker than he was, but his hand clung to its unstable, ethereal surface as if wanting to wield it.
"I initially dismissed it as something unique to the Great Old One," Khan commented, inspecting the raging lightning bolt, "Which it is. Even if I tried to copy its perception, my brain wouldn’t be able to handle it. However, a quadrant is within my capabilities."
Khan didn’t say a single lie. The Great Old One’s ability to gather information across and past a whole star system wasn’t something he could imitate. However, surpassing the limits of his perception and influence was doable.
Theoretically, Khan already had all the necessary cards back then. His perception was incredible, and he could manipulate his mana quite freely. Khan had even succeeded at altering his chaos’ structure, too.
Nevertheless, destruction was Khan’s strong suit, so he had focused on enhancing that feature to get stronger. His element naturally leaned toward those aspects, so he had believed himself unable to unleash such a subtle but widespread attack.
Of course, that had turned out to be wrong. Khan’s destruction was powerful, but it was also a self-imposed limit stemming from his desperation and a life that seemed incapable of featuring anything else.
"Try to survive this one," Khan warned again, tilting his head toward the two aliens. "I still have questions to ask."
The widespread storm grew louder, alerting the black aliens, but the warning was for naught. A raging, blinding energy suddenly invaded their senses, overwhelming their very existence and making them lose control of their bodies.
The abrupt event severed the aliens’ connection with the outside world, but their senses slowly resumed working, updating them on their condition.
The aliens found themselves lying on charred ground at the center of an immense crater while cracks covered their entire figures. Even the blood flowing out of their burning injuries featured those fissures.
Nothing worked. The aliens immediately discovered that their bodies were unresponsive. Even their very existence felt in pieces, wounded deeply by an attack they couldn’t record. Wisps of their glowing black smoke still rose from their shoulders, but the damage was too extensive to fix with so little remaining energy.
Moreover, the assault wasn’t over. A figure hovered in the middle of the crater, his blue eyes shining down on the two aliens. Khan stood in the air like an envoy of destruction, the illumination from the lightning bolts and clouds flashing behind him.
The deep crater hindered the aliens’ view of the surface, but that limited scene was enough to convey their situation. They were against an apocalyptic storm, and Khan was its leader.
Khan lifted his arm, and the clouds above raged, launching a lightning bolt toward him. He caught it, wielding it like a spear ready to be thrust, only for him to decide to speak instead.
"You aren’t that strong once your mana stops annihilating mine," Khan commented. "Because that’s what you wield, right? Mana, but not mana."
