Chapter 1280: Secrets
Liiza realized she had been tricked. The veiled insults toward Monica had worked better than Princess Rebecca could have ever hoped for, making Liiza forget about the reason behind her stay in the living room entirely.
Truthfully, Liiza knew better than to let those strategies fool her. She wasn’t as politically savvy as Khan, but her role in her tribe had made her more than decent at the job.
Yet, Liiza’s political experience still paled compared to Princess Rebecca’s, and the latter had even blinded her with one of her weaknesses. Liiza had to prioritize proving her suitability as Khan’s wife, which sidetracked her.
Of course, Princess Rebecca herself had been another weakness. She was Khan’s Aunt, so Liiza couldn’t treat her as a political opponent. Liiza had been on high alert, but not against those types of tricks.
Luckily, Princess Rebecca didn’t take the matter to heart and started laughing, covering her mouth with a hand to add decorum to her reaction.
Liiza smiled in response, but the switch had been flicked. She pretended to relax, but her mind remained tense, wary of what else Princess Rebecca could throw at her.
“I’m sorry, dear Niece,” Princess Rebecca announced. “I hope you’ll forgive me. I don’t have many opportunities to tease my Nephews, so I indulged a bit too much in it.”
Liiza kept smiling, but her mind took mental notes. Proper political opponents were easy enough to deal with, especially since she could resort to more drastic methods. Yet, Princess Rebecca didn’t belong to that category, instantly increasing her danger level.
“But I’m glad,” Princess Rebecca continued. “I truly am. Seeing my Nephew’s wife being so overprotective toward him does reassure me a great deal.”
“If I don’t look out for him,” Liiza commented, “No one will. No one else can, either.”
“I’m well aware,” Princess Rebecca agreed. “Many have tried and failed over the years, and he always blamed himself for those outcomes. I’m happy he can finally have someone who is his match at his side.”
Liiza lowered her gaze. She and Khan had discussed the ten-year gap plenty of times, but some details had inevitably been left out. However, the short version was that he didn’t have it easy in that period, and all the people close to him seemed to agree.
“Are you as strong as he is?” Princess Rebecca wondered, forcing Liiza to focus on her again.
“Rebecca, are you trying to distract me again?” Liiza asked, chuckling.
“I was just being a concerned Aunt,” Princess Rebecca reassured. “Let’s see. He was a curious kid, always smiling and laughing, running all over the place until he had no more energy to give.”
“That part of him hasn’t changed,” Liiza pointed out.
“With parents like that,” Princess Rebecca scoffed. “His Father was stubborn and obsessive, while my Sister could hardly stay put. I remember his eyes lit up whenever Elizabeth talked about her travels or Bret described his latest findings.”
“That didn’t come from his mutations, then,” Liiza said, smiling. “Interspecies relationships are rare in the end.”
“Don’t sell yourself short,” Princess Rebecca scolded. “Khan would have been more human without the Second Impact, but he would have remained my Sister’s son, and the entire faction feared she would have never found a husband with her character.”
Princess Rebecca went to sip from her glass, only to notice it was empty.
“The whole thing with Bret was quite miraculous,” Princess Rebecca explained, reaching for a nearby bottle, “For both of them. No one expected them to care about finding a partner, but you probably know how it ended.”
Liiza nodded. As always, some details were still unclear, but Khan did tell her about his family’s situation.
“Do you have family?” Princess Rebecca asked. “The Nognes welcome you with open arms, but it’s not right to steal you away without saying anything.”
“I have relatives among the [Elders],” Liiza revealed before realizing that Princess Rebecca might not know about that. “They are detached from society and count more as part of my tribe than my family.”
Liiza wanted to leave things at that, but her brain wouldn’t let her. Truth be told, she had a few people who could fit that description, and her bashfulness couldn’t make her lie to Khan’s Aunt.
“Zalpa was my nanny and [Guru],” Liiza explained, “My teacher. She is here on Coravis and will accompany Khan and me during the flight. We aren’t blood-related, but she is family.”
Princess Rebecca knew who Liiza was talking about. After all, only three Niqols had landed on Coravis, and it wasn’t exactly hard to spot Zalpa.
“And,” Liiza continued, realizing something she had managed not to think about. “My Father is still around. We don’t talk much, and he must have gone back to Nitis after I left with Khan, so he is unreachable.”
Princess Rebecca couldn’t fail to notice the slight blush that spread on Liiza’s cheeks. She found it cute but also revealing. It seemed Liiza had never truly pondered the matter, and not knowing about her situation made Princess Rebecca change topics.
Liiza also gave the Princess a perfect chance. Thinking about her Father intensified her shyness, and her hands inevitably went to her slightly bloated waist. Liiza was an only child, so Deni probably deserved to know he was about to become a Grandfather.
“Do you already know the gender?” Princess Rebecca asked, nodding at Liiza’s waist. “According to my calculations, it’s still a bit too early, but that applies to humans.”
“Khan and I decided not to know,” Liiza stated, diverting her gaze before slowly bringing it back to Princess Rebecca, “But can you keep a secret?”
“Finally!” Princess Rebecca exclaimed. “This is the girls talk I was hoping for.”
Liiza laughed while looking at her waist, caressing it. “I tease Khan about our child being a girl, but I secretly hope he’s a boy. She would immediately become his priority, and I want to remain his top girl.”
Liiza heaved a sigh, lovingly glancing at her waist before smiling at Princess Rebecca.
“It’s childish, I know,” Liiza admitted, “But I feel we have spent so little time together. I’m grateful I got pregnant so soon, but part of me wanted to remain just the two of us a bit longer.”
Khan and Liiza’s relationship had been relatively short and full of compromises. They had barely spent a total of two years together, and a massive ten-year gap had stood between them.
Also, Khan and Liiza had spent most of their relationship in hiding, both on Nitis and while traveling the universe. She didn’t regret any of that, nor her current situation, but part of her was just a girl in love.
“Khan will never stop pampering you,” Princess Rebecca reassured. “You will always be the woman who gave him a family.”
“I know,” Liiza said. “I would actually love it if she were a girl. I need all the help I can get against him.”
“You can always try again if he is a boy,” Princess Rebecca suggested.
“I plan to,” Liiza revealed. “I will give Khan as many children as I can. I’ll make sure his life is filled with family love from now on.”
“Do you know the human nobles’ stance on children?” Princess Rebecca asked. “We usually limit ourselves to avoid squandering the family’s resources.”
“I couldn’t care less about that,” Liiza declared as the temperature began to drop. “And if someone tries to get in my way, the family will have fewer people demanding its resources.”
