Chapter 49: The Treasure

The demonic pressure on the first level of the Demon-Suppressing Pagoda had little effect on Lin Jing, who felt it wasn’t even as disorienting as a Bewilderment Pill. He walked toward the staircase leading to the second level, expecting the promised Buddhist light to descend and strengthen his mental fortitude.

However, despite waiting for a while, nothing happened. Instead, the walls of the floor began to emit stronger waves of demonic energy, causing Lin Jing to frown. The Pine Leaf Mouse, sensing something amiss, poked its head out from Lin Jing’s monk’s hat and nudged him. This wasn’t what Elder Mo had described—where was the fortuitous encounter? Could Lin Jing’s pessimistic prediction about trouble really be coming true?

Impossible…

Lin Jing hesitated and stepped back slightly, considering retreating. Perhaps it was better to cultivate steadily and progress one step at a time.

“Let’s go back,” he said.

The Pine Leaf Mouse nodded in agreement, and Lin Jing resolutely turned to leave, suppressing his curiosity. Unfortunately, just as he began to retreat, the demonic energy condensed into a small snake-like figure—a black eel that appeared so feeble it looked on the verge of death.

“Wait, great monk!” the black eel called out.

Lin Jing stopped mid-step, his face grim as he turned to look at it.

Great monk? Me?

Lin Jing mulled this over and decided to probe. “It seems the seal on this tower may need reinforcing after all.”

“Great monk!” The black eel panicked. “This little demon knows its wrongs. Please give me a chance to repent!”

“The seal on this tower is still very strong! The fact that I could leak out even a sliver of consciousness came at an immense, painful, and irreversible cost. It poses no threat!”

“After being imprisoned here for years, I have genuinely repented. I beg the great monk to undo the Buddhist seal. I am willing to serve you as a demon servant, faithfully following you, and will turn over a new leaf.”

Lin Jing narrowed his eyes at the creature, letting a smug expression slowly spread across his face.

“Bold demon! Still trying to deceive me!” Lin Jing declared, his voice resonating with authority. “This does not demonstrate the sincerity of your repentance.”

The Pine Leaf Mouse, hidden in the hat, felt its heart race. Beast Tamer, what are you doing?

The eel hesitated but then gritted its teeth. “I understand. I will reveal the location of my treasure to prove my loyalty!”

Lin Jing’s interest piqued, though his face remained impassive. “Where is this treasure?”

“It lies at Tianyin Mountain, on the border between the Wasteland Domain and the Empty Domain. However, only I can open the entrance. If the great monk retrieves it, please return and accept me as your servant. I will dedicate everything I obtained from the Cavern Heaven as tribute!”

Before Lin Jing could respond, a golden light suddenly pierced through the walls of the pagoda, illuminating the entire floor. The eel screamed in agony as the Buddhist light condensed into a phantom figure—a handsome, young monk in white robes.

The monk surveyed the snake-like demon with a calm expression before turning to Lin Jing.

“You… you… you!” The eel was struck with terror at the sight of the monk, but the latter merely sighed. “After all these years, Undying Black Serpent, your senses have deteriorated to such an extent?”

“You expended so much effort to leak a fragment of consciousness, only to beg for help from a ‘great monk’ who is actually a Qi Refining cultivator using illusions?”

“If your former subordinates knew, they would laugh themselves to death.”

The monk waved his hand, dispersing the Illusionary Path Qi that surrounded Lin Jing. With the illusion dispelled, the once-mighty high monk was revealed as a youthful Beast Taming Sect disciple. The black eel rolled over in the pool, and the room fell into awkward silence.

“A Beast Taming Sect cultivator…”

“At Qi Refining…”

“ARRRGHHHH!” the eel exploded with rage, its fury uncontainable as it glared at Lin Jing. “Damn you, Beast Taming Sect! Damn you! Why is a beast tamer practicing illusion arts? Curse you!”

“Damn it! Damn it! Just you wait—when I get out, I will tear you limb from limb and obliterate your sect!” the eel howled before being purified by a beam of Buddhist light, leaving Lin Jing standing there, looking completely innocent.

Heaven help me, Lin Jing thought, I’m just an innocent bystander. All I did was talk for a bit—why so much hate?

“He was desperate because of your illusionary monk aura,” the white-robed monk explained. “This seal can only be broken by Buddhist techniques, and your illusion gave him hope. After all, you’re only the second ‘Buddhist cultivator’ to enter this tower in centuries.”

Lin Jing winced. Why, oh why, did I choose to transform into Fa Hai?

“Junior Lin Jing of the Beast Taming Sect greets Senior,” Lin Jing said, bowing deeply.

“No need to be nervous,” the monk replied. “For a Beast Taming Sect disciple to achieve such mastery of illusion arts, the outside world must have changed greatly. My consciousness was sealed here for this very moment.”

“Centuries ago, that serpent was a fearsome demon, fearless of heaven or earth. Yet now, to escape, it grovels before a Qi Refining cultivator. How pitiful.”

Lin Jing had no response. Who wouldn’t go mad after being sealed for thousands of years? Even the Monkey King was only trapped for 500.

“Junior, I have good news and bad news. Which would you like to hear first?” the monk asked, smiling faintly.

Lin Jing tensed, sensing something ominous. “Senior, I’ll take the bad news first.”

“The bad news is that my consciousness is tied to the seal. Unsealing my consciousness slightly weakens the tower’s overall structure, making the demon’s containment less effective.”

“This failsafe was meant to trigger far into the future when the demon could pose a genuine threat. But now, due to your illusion, we’ve all had a bit of a fright.”

Lin Jing’s face darkened. So the pagoda’s seal really is loosening?

“That’s decades away. There’s no need to worry. Simply report this truthfully to your sect. The demon’s abilities are unusual but not particularly powerful—it is easily suppressed, especially with the Demon-Slaying Bureau involved.”

“And the good news?” Lin Jing asked cautiously.

“The treasure the Undying Black Serpent mentioned—it is real. Long ago, it killed many sect prodigies and looted seeds of rare plants from a Cavern Heaven. These treasures may prove useful to your sect.”

“Thank you for the guidance, Senior,” Lin Jing said, relieved that it wasn’t all bad news.

“You entered the pagoda seeking the Buddhist light, did you not?” the monk said, smiling. “I cannot let you leave empty-handed. This light strengthens the soul. You have a karmic connection to Buddhism, so accept this boon as a token of our meeting.”

Without waiting for a response, the monk invoked a radiant shower of Buddhist light, enveloping Lin Jing and the Pine Leaf Mouse.
