Chapter 33: The Bully Sect
“No wonder he’s a body cultivator; even after taking a full round of shots, he can still move. That gave me a scare.”
Lin Jing shook the water droplets from the barrel of his weapon, ignoring the looks of disbelief on his fellow sect disciples’ faces. He turned to the delighted Pine Leaf Mouse that had returned to him.
“Squeak!!!” The mouse chittered excitedly. This was so much better than the Inner Sect examination!
“You… son… of a…” The Snow Plains cultivator’s lips trembled, but no sound came out. His broken body prevented him from moving, and his consciousness began to fade. He couldn’t comprehend how a Beast Tamer disciple could be this strong.
Thud.
As the Snow Plains cultivator collapsed, severely wounded, the scholar in green robes, the alchemist in violet flame robes, and the young swordsman all turned their gazes toward Lin Jing and the Pine Leaf Mouse.
“Qi Refining Level Three? Qi Refining Level Seven?”
They could sense Lin Jing and the Pine Leaf Mouse’s cultivation levels. The mouse’s level was passable, but Lin Jing’s was laughably low. And yet, this supposedly weak cultivator had just overpowered a body cultivator from another country. It was absurd.
“That’s a mechanical creation, isn’t it?” The scholar asked. “Wait, are you a Beast Tamer or a Mechanized Craftsman?”“Does it matter?” Lin Jing casually lowered the Mechanical Bamboo Rifle.
The other three showed wariness at Lin Jing’s contraption. Mechanized Craftsmen were often underestimated because their cultivation levels were usually low, but their true strength lay in their mechanical creations.
If the outsiders were cautious, Lin Jing’s fellow Beast Taming Sect disciples were outright dumbfounded. Even the Demon-Hunting Hall members exchanged uneasy glances.
Could Lin Jing really be planning to use this contraption to compete with them in the Inner Sect examination? It sounded like a joke…
“Junior Brother, this…” Senior Brother Ziran began awkwardly. “We don’t have any bad blood, right?”
“Of course not,” Lin Jing replied smoothly. “This is just something I prepared to deal with Foundation Establishment-level demon beasts during the examination.”
He then turned to the scholar, the alchemist, and the swordsman, raising his rifle. “I dealt with the Snow Plains cultivator for you. I’d like to use the golden Bodhi Tree. That’s reasonable, isn’t it?”
“I take it you’re the true prodigy chosen by the Cavern Heaven from the Beast Taming Sect,” the scholar remarked, dusting off his robes. “Impressive. I didn’t expect your sect to produce such a talented Mechanized Craftsman.”
“But mechanical creations consume a lot of energy, and lower-level mechanisms don’t last long. After such an intense assault earlier, your contraption is probably running low on power and close to malfunctioning, isn’t it?”
In response, Lin Jing calmly swapped out the bamboo magazine in his rifle and pulled the trigger without a word. Water arrows shot toward the scholar, who immediately paled. Having seen the fate of the Snow Plains cultivator, he dared not take a direct hit.
“Silver Tongue, Sword and Spear!” The scholar exhaled, and his breath materialized into a flurry of blades and swords in mid-air, intercepting the water arrows before they could explode.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The Mechanical Bamboo Rifle’s attacks had their limitations, allowing the scholar to block them. However, by the time Lin Jing’s magazine was empty, the scholar was visibly parched from repeatedly using his technique. He quickly took out a Replenishing Pill to swallow, only to feel a sharp sting on his neck as a red leaf grazed it, drawing blood.
The scholar glanced at the Pine Leaf Mouse perched on Lin Jing’s shoulder. It was staring at his storage pouch.
Two against one.
“I concede,” the scholar declared, taking a deep breath. “Thank you for your mercy. I am Xu Zhizhi from Shengyun City in the Literary Domain.”
“Lin Jing of the Beast Taming Sect,” Lin Jing replied, reloading his rifle with a fresh magazine.
Xu Zhizhi’s eyelid twitched. This guy had come prepared, as if he’d known in advance he’d enter the Cavern Heaven.
Lin Jing’s gaze shifted to the alchemist and the swordsman.
Though clearly frustrated, Xu Zhizhi chose to approach the silver Bodhi Tree, deciding to cut his losses. As a scholar, combat was not his strength.
“What a waste. You’re just a Beast Tamer. Even with the golden Bodhi Tree, you won’t produce anything worthwhile,” the alchemist muttered.
But before she could settle beneath the silver Bodhi Tree, the Pine Leaf Mouse leaped ahead of her. It pulled a tiny Mechanical Bamboo Rifle from its storage pouch, set it on the ground, and fired a shot next to Xu Zhizhi.
Boom!
The blast stopped Xu Zhizhi in his tracks.
“Sorry,” Lin Jing said. “The golden Bodhi Tree is mine. The silver one belongs to my companion. We don’t plan on sharing.”
“What?!” Xu Zhizhi exploded. “Isn’t that your spirit beast? Why do you need separate trees?!”
“Don’t be greedy,” Lin Jing replied calmly. “If we were greedy, you’d already be dead, and your storage pouch wouldn’t still be with you. Opportunity belongs to those capable of seizing it. If we couldn’t beat you, we’d naturally back off. Fair, friendly, and harmonious competition is ideal.”
The Pine Leaf Mouse squeaked in agreement, eyeing the storage pouch hungrily.
Lin Jing held back against Xu Zhizhi, knowing scholars from the Literary Domain often had ties to the Ancient Celestial Kingdom’s bureaucracy. Making an enemy of him over a pouch wasn’t worth it.
“Are you two really going to let him monopolize two Bodhi Trees?” Xu Zhizhi turned to the alchemist and swordsman for support.
The alchemist frowned. “Let’s team up. This squirrel isn’t cute at all—it’s practically a Mechanized Craftsman itself.”
The silent swordsman finally drew his sword, tacitly agreeing to join forces.
“Ganging up on someone isn’t heroic,” Senior Sister Qin Caixin of the Beast Taming Sect interjected. “Don’t forget, we have seven disciples here.”
“Senior Brothers, we entered the Cavern Heaven by chance. Our strength may not be enough to secure opportunities, but we can’t let outsiders gang up on Junior Brother Lin.”
“She’s right,” Senior Brother Ziran agreed, stroking his Fire Spirit Sparrow. “While we may be rivals in the examination, we are all Beast Taming Sect disciples outside the sect. Elder Li instructed us to support Junior Brother Lin if we couldn’t secure opportunities ourselves.”
“None of us are strong, but we’re all in the Qi Refining stage. These three don’t seem as terrifying as that body cultivator. A sneak attack would still hurt them,” Senior Brother He Yiming added, removing the cloth from his Battle Ape’s weapon.
The Demon-Hunting Hall disciples nodded, locking onto the three outsiders with their spirit beasts. If not all sect disciples could seize opportunities, they’d ensure the greatest chance for one of their own.
With the Beast Taming Sect’s disciples rallying around Lin Jing, a 16-versus-3 standoff emerged. Though the outsiders dismissed most of the sect disciples as weaklings, the numbers still created pressure.
“You’re not the Beast Taming Sect—you’re the Bully Sect!” the alchemist fumed.
“Thank you, Senior Brothers and Sisters,” Lin Jing said sincerely. He couldn’t predict the outsiders’ trump cards, but a strong display of unity was always advantageous. Cavern Heaven opportunities were rare, and he wouldn’t miss this chance to maximize his and the Pine Leaf Mouse’s gains.
The next moment, the turtle, which was the same color as the Mechanical Bamboo Rifle, pointed its cannon-like muzzle at the enemy.
The scholar in the blue robe felt a twinge of annoyance. He had no doubt that this contraption could fire the same devastating attack as before.
“Damn it, is this really a Qi Refining disciple from the Beast Taming Sect?” the scholar muttered, his frustration evident. “It feels like all the books I’ve read might as well have been written by a dog. This man—and this squirrel—are nothing like the Beast Taming Sect disciples I’ve read about. Who has ever heard of a squirrel using mechanical creations?!”
