AWAKENING THE DAILY INTELLIGENCE SYSTEM
Chapter 795 - 795: 339 A Glimmer of HopeChapter 795: 339 A Glimmer of Hope
“It’s over… completely over! Even Jack Thompson, who hid so well, couldn’t escape the Dark Law Enforcer’s pursuit. What chance do we have? I don’t want to die!” Kevin Xiong collapsed onto the sofa next to Oscar, his face etched with despair. He clutched his head in his hands, his voice shaking with sobs, looking as if the end of the world had already arrived.
“What should we do now? Even that detective, David, couldn’t handle them. What can we possibly do?” Robert Deng, sitting beside Kevin Xiong, sighed heavily. His tone was filled with helplessness and confusion, as if he had entirely lost faith in the future.
“What if… we call the police?” Tom Tang hesitated for a long moment before finally stuttering out the suggestion. His voice was so faint it resembled the buzz of a mosquito, as if even he lacked confidence in his own words.
“Enough! What’s the point of all this noise?” Oscar couldn’t take it anymore. His eyes flared wide like those of an enraged lion as he bellowed at the others. His voice echoed through the room, carrying a commanding authority that abruptly silenced everyone.
Once the room fell silent, Oscar’s expression darkened, and in a low, somber voice, he continued, “Call the police?! Never mind the danger we’re in right now—just the sight of that Dragon and Phoenix Soup on the coffee table will seal our fate!” Oscar’s words struck like a hammer, slamming into everyone’s hearts and driving home the oppressive weight of their predicament.
“Brother Jun, what do we do? I’ll follow whatever you say,” William Wang said, standing deferentially beside Oscar with his head bowed. His tone was tinged with reverence. In this criminal gang, Oscar’s authority was unquestionable, and William Wang knew this perfectly well. Thus, he unequivocally deferred to Oscar’s leadership.
Oscar nodded and fell into a pensive silence. After a moment, his gaze sharpened, and he declared resolutely, “Although we outnumber them, to be safe, we leave now!” His voice was low but firm, exuding an unshakable finality, as though he had already made the ultimate decision.
“Alright!” The others immediately echoed in agreement. Though a trace of panic colored their voices, their trust in Oscar far outweighed their fear. To them, following him might just be their slim chance of survival.
However, at that very moment, the office door—which had been securely closed—suddenly began to creak open, as if pushed by an invisible hand. It opened silently and slowly. Strangely, though the door swung ajar, no one stepped inside.
“Who’s there!” Oscar reacted instantly. The moment he saw the door move, he leapt from the sofa like an enraged predator, his loud voice reverberating with vigilance and fury, freezing the air in the room.
Seeing Oscar’s reaction, William Wang immediately sprang into action. With lightning reflexes, he grabbed the fruit knife from the coffee table and sprinted to the doorway, positioning himself there. His eyes fixed intensely on the hallway beyond, gleaming with a lethal intent. It was clear he would strike without hesitation at the first sign of danger.
The group stood frozen in place, staring tensely at the open doorway. Time seemed to drag to a halt. Their hearts pounded erratically, their breathing quickened, and every nerve in their bodies tightened in readiness for the unknown threat ahead. Yet, after what felt like an eternity, the doorway remained eerily empty—there was not a single shadow to be seen.
This realization unsettled Oscar, a growing sense of unease taking root in his chest. Like a planted seed, the feeling sprouted and expanded rapidly. A flurry of questions flooded his mind: Why wasn’t anyone at the doorway? Where were the trained bodyguards stationed outside? Had they… had the Dark Law Enforcers arrived?
Oscar had no time to dwell on these thoughts. His hand darted under his jacket, pulling out a black handgun. Firmly gripping the weapon with both hands, he aimed it toward the doorway and squeezed the trigger without hesitation.
“Bang!” The gunshot shattered the orphanage’s nighttime silence like thunder, reverberating through the empty courtyard long after it was fired.
“I know you’re there! If you’ve got guts, come out!” Oscar bellowed, brandishing the gun. In his commanding voice, there was a faint edge of tension—subtle, but unmistakable to a careful ear. His piercing gaze scanned every inch of the doorway, his sharp vigilance leaving no corner unchecked.
Still, the area beyond the door remained cloaked in silence, as though nothing had occurred. Not even the faintest sound of breathing could be heard; the oppressive quiet seemed to swallow all presence, leaving an unnatural chill in its wake.
Seeing this, the group maintained their outwardly defensive stances, but inwardly, they exhaled a collective sigh of relief. After all, they had a gun. In their minds, even if the Dark Law Enforcers truly were here, a weapon in hand was enough to ensure their survival.
“Tap, tap, tap.” And yet, just as their guard began to drop, the sound of clear footsteps echoed through the hallway beyond. The noise pierced the unnatural stillness of the corridor, each step reverberating loudly, each impact striking like a hammer on their nerves. Instantly, their previously relaxed composure vanished, replaced once more by gripping tension as their hearts leaped to their throats.
