After Whisker’s absurd statement, Atticus separated from him and headed back towards the encampment where the survivors were gathered.

He just couldn’t deal with the eccentric man right now.

A second later, he appeared above a vast expanse with billions of tents and buildings sprawled downward like an unending sea of makeshift life.

This was the temporary shelter the paragons had helped the people build. While many elites among them had enough supplies stored in their space storage to last a decade, not everyone was that fortunate.

Some didn’t even own space storage.

And many… couldn’t afford even that day’s meal.

They had divided the people based on their races for familiarity and comfort, giving each group portable shelters to live in, for now.

Atticus fixed his gaze on the utter darkness that engulfed the shelter. It wasn’t that late at night, but the silence was absolute. After the chaos of the day, most had turned in for the night.

He shifted his eyes from the massive encampment to a large building perched on a large hill in the distance.

A blink later, he was standing before it.

‘There’re people inside.’

He could feel the presences.

‘The apexes.’

Whisker had mentioned it earlier, that he’d dropped them off at Atticus’ place.

‘I would have loved the quiet.’

He sighed. He’d created this house far from the main shelter for peace and solitude. But clearly, Whisker had been hellbent on ruining that.

Atticus opened the door and stepped inside, his gaze landing on five figures seated in the main living room.

Magnus. Avalon. Anastasia.

And then, the three remaining apexes, Lirae, Maera, and Ae’ark.

The trio stood up the moment they saw him, each reacting differently.

Ae’ark looked completely tense. The moment he rose, he instinctively took a step back, like his body was screaming at him to run from the monster in front of him.

Lirae gave a small smile, happy to see Atticus, though there was caution in her eyes.

But Maera’s eyes lit up like twin stars. Pure joy radiated from her as she saw him.

They had all been briefed by now, about the scattered world cores, and that they possessed them. And more importantly… that Atticus needed them.

Did that mean they had to die?

Maera didn’t seem to care. But it was clear Lirae and Ae’ark absolutely did.

“At, where did you go?” Anastasia walked over, gently cupping his face with a worried expression.

“I wanted to get some air, Mom.”

“I understand. You should rest, At. It’s been a long day.”

Atticus nodded. “I will. How about you? Are you okay?”

He gave her a look, and she blinked, startled. It had been a while since Atticus asked her that.

She smiled weakly and pulled him into a hug. “I’m just glad you’re okay.”

Atticus hugged her back, feeling the warmth in her embrace.

‘She’s tired.’

She hadn’t gotten proper sleep in months. Between the looming war and his coma, she had barely rested.

He hugged her tighter.

‘I can’t stop.’

He wanted to promise her that he would put himself in danger anymore, but that was impossible if they hoped to survive.

A hole had been ripped open in their segment. And according to Whisker, because of how the Midplanes worked, the more gods and worlds a faction had, the stronger they became.

That was why Whisker’s father had sent them down here, to take over and ascend. The same with the Spirit King, who wanted to consume their world.

If they stayed here, more would come. And it would only get worse.

They had to become stronger. He had to become stronger.

“You’ll choke the kid. He’s an adult now, you know,” Avalon said with a teasing grin as he stepped forward and wrapped them both in a hug.

“He’ll always be my baby,” Anastasia replied without opening her eyes.

Magnus cleared his throat and turned away, clearly not joining in, at least not publicly.

After a few seconds, the hug ended, and Atticus excused himself to speak with the apexes.

He smiled as he passed Magnus. The man’s expression cracked, and he smiled back, nodding in approval. But Atticus could see the flicker of sadness in his eyes.

The news about the annihilation of the Starhaven had long since spread and practically all the paragons knew.

Magnus and Seraphina had been… close. Not to that extent, but close enough to call themselves friends. Losing her so suddenly had sent an ache through his chest.

Atticus reached the apexes and instantly felt the tense air of Lirae and Ae’ark.

But Maera surprised him. Unlike the others, her intent held nothing but genuine joy. She was truly happy to see him.

Maera stepped forward and hugged him.

Atticus didn’t know how to react, so he just let it happen.

Anastasia and Avalon raised their brows as they saw a beautiful Obliteri hugging their son.

They glanced at each other and smiled knowingly.

Atticus sighed internally.

Maera felt exactly like she looked, small, soft, and warm. Her head barely reached his chest, and her tiny arms couldn’t even wrap around his broad frame.

After a few seconds, she released him but remained close, like she didn’t want him to run.

“I’m glad you’re okay,” she whispered.

“…Thank you.”

He nodded awkwardly, and her excitement flared in response.

Clearing his throat, he turned to the other two.

“You were amazing, Atticus,” Lirae said with a cautious smile. “Who would’ve thought you’d actually win.”

“You’ve come a long way since our first battle,” Ae’ark added, trying to hide his tension.

Atticus looked at them silently for a moment before finally speaking.

“You can all relax. I don’t need to kill you to retrieve your cores. There’s another way.”

A heavy weight seemed to lift from their shoulders in that moment, and Lirae was the first to speak. “What way?”

Ae’ark ears perked, listening carefully. Maera, however, kept staring at Atticus, for a completely different reason.

“You’ll find out when the time comes,” he said. “It’s dangerous, but it shouldn’t end with you dying. At least not if things go well.”

They nodded, visibly relieved.

“Is there anything we can do to help?”
