Chapter 1592: Stubborn Brute
Catastrophic.
It was the only word Rex could summon to describe the crushing weight bearing down on him.
Crossing the Fifthborn for the first time right in front of the Great Barricade back then was chilling, like a bucket of cold water being drenched from top to bottom. But this time—the Voidal Monarch brought along a crushing feeling like the sky was collapsing on him.
One that Rex could only compare to the abomination in the Chaos Realm that restrained Edward.
Each person in Lorayah Village was terrified, understandably so.
Abras, who reeked with experience of managing the village, was now frozen on his spot.
He couldn’t move, stunned at the approaching catastrophe.
Around them, the Black Rift began to move away, pulled like steel to a magnet by the Voidal Monarch, displaying its command over the spiritless darkness. Akin to the entire world was welcoming this thing with open arms.
Rex had seen a Voidal Prince before.
He even witnessed, although briefly, the enormous power a Voidal Prince possessed.
But it didn’t come close to this.
Even meeting Kei Xun wasn’t as suffocating as this.
Perhaps because she was more controlled with her power and the Voidal Monarch is more chaotic, not necessarily stronger, but Rex decided to assume the latter. If this catastrophe were stronger than Kei Xun, then he has no chance against it.
I can’t leave. Not without Kaelthar.
Rex was rooted on his spot, knowing full well the implications of losing Kaelthar.
“What are you hesitating for? Come with me!”
Princess Davina approached him with rushed steps, glancing over to the people of Lorayah Village, as she was worried that these people would be surrounding her later for safety. Not even Esmeravon can carry these people, and if the situation slipped from her control, she could also get stuck here.
’It’s not my territory. I’m not obligated to help them. I’m sorry, but this is what the world has become.’
Allowing these people to die would take a toll on her conscience.
She wanted to save them, but she couldn’t.
If it’s against a Voidal Prince, she could attempt to lure it away.
But against a Voidal Monarch? One that could even pose a threat to the royal family? It’s impossible.
At most, she would need to sacrifice herself to save these people.
And even then, there’s a high chance for her to fail.
She reached for Rex’s hand, intending to forcefully pull him away.
Even in that intense moment, Princess Davina noticed that Rex’s eyes had returned to normal.
It was then—she was surprised when she was shoved backward.
Rex twisted his hand, freeing himself from Princess Davina, and sprinted back into the village.
He didn’t idle long and made his move.
“Rex! Are you insane?! You can find another way to visit the Sky City!”
Princess Davina called for him, but he kept going, ignoring her completely without hesitation.
She was at a loss for words.
’Just what is he thinking? There’s always another way as long as he’s alive. What’s the rush?’
Clicking her tongue in displeasure, Princess Davina turned in the direction from which the Voidal Monarch was coming, making sure that there was still time, and chased after Rex. She couldn’t leave him here in this village.
Not if she wanted to achieve her goals.
’If he dies here, I’m going to look incompetent. Rex, how dare he put me in this situation?’
On the other hand, Rex rushed down to the dark room, to where Kaelthar was.
Knowing that the situation demanded his full focus, he took over his body once again.
He didn’t trust the Invincible Apparition to prioritize his goals.
In there, he immediately approached the sitting Kaelthar.
Forcefully, Rex tried to carry him out of the space, which should be possible since he was sleeping.
But as soon as he started pulling, he realized that he couldn’t do it.
<Notice: the target is bound by the Spirit Genesis: Dream Market.>
<In order to bring the target out, the Spirit Genesis must be cancelled or destroyed.>
Reading this, Rex instantly riled up the Minor Law of Misdirection through the golden halo.
He encompassed the entire space with the power of the Minor Law, grasping the invisible Spirit Genesis that was influencing the space, and began to untangle the construct of the Spirit Genesis. If he did it as quickly as possible, he could possibly cancel the Spirit Genesis.
But that depends entirely on the power of the person who casts it in the first place.
Anything above his rank, and it would certainly take longer.
“Rrghh…!”
A grunt escaped his lips.
Even though he knew that the Dream Market Spirit Genesis was cast by a stronger spirit, he was hoping that it wasn’t the case. However, once the Minor Law of Misdirection wrapped around the space, it was clear that the spirit was stronger.
Rex hadn’t even started, but the strain was already there.
Cancelling the Spirit Genesis felt like shattering a rock bare-handed as a normal person.
It’s outright impossible.
At least impossible without time.
I only have a minute or maybe a little more. System, how long will it take for this to finish?!
<Calculating…>
<Cancellation Process: 16 minutes.>
Seeing this, Rex gritted his teeth as that requires too much time.
All he had was one minute or two at maximum.
“Is it impossible for me to get him out?” Rex looked at Kaelthar with frustration. “I can’t afford it.”
Rex couldn’t afford to lose Kaelthar.
Not if he wanted to complete his tasks in this realm and retain his power.
He wouldn’t know what to do—other than convincing Duke Lorcan to give him permission to enter the Sky City, which would take even longer. Now that he has made contact with Empress Morgana, the Phoenix Feather and Maw of Oblivion are within his grasp.
But Devo, he would lose control over Devo if he failed here.
Rex’s ears suddenly perked.
A sharp, whistling sound sliced through the air without warning.
Crack!
“Grrhk?!”
Rex hissed when a sudden pain stabbed his right leg.
He looked down and saw an emerald lance made entirely of light piercing through his leg.
It looked like moonlight, but Rex felt no connection to it.
So, it wasn’t moonlight, it was starlight.
Knowing exactly whose it was, he looked up and growled.
“Davina!!”
He roared with a hoarse voice, glaring at Davina at the trapdoor’s mouth.
Princess Davina showed no reaction, looking at him with the same calmness she had—as if everything was under her control. She raised her hand and flicked it gently, causing the lance stabbing Rex’s right leg to branch inside his flesh.
Starlight streamed out and infiltrated his blood and life energy flow forcefully.
Just that move alone not only immobilizes Rex’s right leg, but his entire body with relative ease.
On top of that, the lance that wasn’t submerged in his flesh melted.
Rex tried to reach for it, to pull it out, but now he can’t do that anymore.
Shing!
As another pulse of energy reverberated inside, he fell to one knee, still glaring fiercely.
Princess Davina leaped down and landed right behind him.
“I’m going to bring you away, whether you like it or not. Best for you to comply.”
“Then break the Spirit Genesis and bring this person with us! I need him!”
“No, the Voidal Monarch is already close—there’s no time to do anything but run away.”
“You don’t fucking understand! I need him!”
“Don’t be stupid. You can always think of a way to go to the Sky City. Your life is more important.”
Rex’s eyes burned with anger as his aura exploded.
Not even needing his permission, all three of his Soul Artifacts materialized at once, responding to his heightening emotions and unleashing his full power as the starlight within him was slowly driven back, which was quite surprising to see for Princess Davina.
Trembling, yet resolute, Rex managed to stand upright once more.
He stared into Princess Davina’s heterochromia eyes.
“Let me go, right now.”
“Do you forget who you’re talking to? Your tone doesn’t intimidate me.”
“If you value our partnership, you have to let me go. You can leave if you want, but I’m staying.”
Princess Davina remained silent.
She could see it in his eyes that he meant what he said.
For whatever reason, one that she didn’t know, Kaelthar is important enough for Rex to risk his life.
No hesitation in his eyes.
Princess Davina could tell that Rex was someone who didn’t flinch at death.
But then again, she already knew that from how he fought in the contest to win her hand in marriage.
She admired the determination in his eyes.
It was something that men in this era lacked, unbridled will, one that even her father had lost.
“Your determination is commendable, Lord Rex, truly. I admired it,” She admitted out loud—then she let out a heavy sigh from her mouth. “And that made what I’m about to do next hard to do, but there’s no other choice.”
Deg!
Rex’s heart thumped hard inside his chest as the starlight grew stronger.
It branched further, turning into a string that wrapped around his insides without mercy.
His blood flow and energy flow were infiltrated as his body was taken over.
Despite trying to fight it, he couldn’t move his body.
“You must understand… the moment you become my fiancé—your life isn’t only yours. It’s mine too.”
As she said that, starlight spilled from her body and wrapped around the paralyzed Rex, lifting him as easily as lifting a feather. Together, they drifted out of the dark space and back toward the outside world, where the situation was escalating.
Rex remained bound and helpless, unable to resist or even more.
System, is there any other way to free myself?!
<Negative, the user is too weak.>
Reading this, his eyes bulged as he struggled desperately.
Outside, the people of Lorayah Village were descending the monolith in a rush, aiming to run away as their bubble wouldn’t be able to withstand a Voidal Monarch going through it. Normally, they don’t need to worry about this, but this time, the Voidal Monarch seemed hell-bent on going through them.
Something was going on, and it was heading this way.
It was either run or be killed for the people.
With a heavy heart—Princess Davina pushed away the desperate hands reaching for her with her aura, summoned her Soul Artifact, and soared into the sky. In the distance, she saw the Voidal Monarch—a massive storm of black smoke and clouds, surging relentlessly toward them.
“Half a minute before impact…” She mumbled and shook her head.
People are going to die, and she wasn’t going to linger around and watch them suffer.
Going out of the barrier, she was immediately hit by the rush of black wind.
It was bitterly cold, and the wind howled directly into her ears, making her frown in discomfort.
Even the sound of lightning strikes in the distance, coming from the Black Rain—carried by the Voidal Monarch, could be heard. Soon enough, this place would be a wasteland, and anything that got too close would be swept alongside it.
Scree!
Hovering in the sky, Esmeravon dived when she noticed Princess Davina emerging.
As she was about to get on, her eyes widened.
“Rex! You stubborn brute…!”
Princess Davina gasped in horror as Rex suddenly made a desperate move—whether by sheer force or some hidden item—he managed to break free from the starlight’s grip. He crashed into the barrier with a sickening thud, then slid down its side, landing roughly.
He landed right in between the Lorayah Village and the charging Voidal Monarch.
“Release me now, Davina!! Or you’ll watch me die without being able to fight!”
Despite the howling wind, his voice was loud and clear.
Princess Davina couldn’t believe it.
She couldn’t believe how reckless and stubborn Rex was for him to force her hands like this.
No time for her to grab him again without clashing with the Voidal Monarch.
All she had time for was to do exactly what Rex asked her to do.
To free him from her power.
“Curse you, Rex… Fine. If you choose to die as a fool, then I won’t stop you.”
